Rapid Hitch
When you purchase a Rapid Hitch, you receive a lifetime warranty on the greaseless caps. All you have to do is submit a warranty claim and our customer service department will send you the correct sized greaseless caps. Once you’ve received your new greaseless caps, here are instructions for how to securely place them on the Rapid Hitch ball:
1. Heat up the greaseless cap in boiling water
We suggest placing the greaseless cap in boiling water for approximately 5 minutes. This will allow the greaseless cap to expand and make it easier to press on the ball.
2. While warm, place greaseless cap on ball
Make sure the inner rim of the greaseless cap is pressed over the ridge of the top of the ball.
3. Wait for greaseless cap to form to ball
As the greaseless cap cools, it will contract around the ball to hold for future towing.
The Rapid Hitch is available in four drop hitch sizes - the 4" drop/rise, the 6" drop/rise, the 8” drop/rise, and a full 10" drop. The 10" drop is recommended for lifted vehicles and has adjustment options from approximately 4" of drop to the full 10" drop. The 8” drop/rise is for cases where a truck is lifted, but not quite as much as the 10”. The standard 6" drop/rise is designed to fit all factory standard pickup trucks. However, we have discovered that in some instances the standard Rapid Hitch might drag on the ground in a dip, so we have added the SUV Rapid Hitch to help eliminate this situation. The shorter SUV Rapid Hitch — featuring a 4” drop/rise — works best with most light trucks, ½ ton trucks, and SUVs.
A quick and easy way to judge what size drop you need is to measure from the ground up to the inside top of your 2" receiver tube. Use the guidelines below to help you pick the right Rapid Hitch for you. Be aware that the tongue heights of your trailers and the suspension on your truck also play a part in choosing the right hitch, but in most cases these measurements will give you what you need. If you are unsure, please take your truck to your local dealer for advice.
In addition to the drop size of the Rapid Hitch, each hitch is available with a 2” shank/receiver as well as the 2-1/2” shank/receiver.
- If the measurement is 20" or less - the 4" drop is for you.
- If the measurement is between 20" and 24" you need the 6" drop.
- If the measurement is between 24" and 28" check out the 8" drop.
- If you measure more than 28" you will need the 10" drop (Can work 24" and more).

Corrosion and sticking can happen when pins are left in place for long periods, especially in areas where roads are salted or treated chemically in winter. Andersen Manufacturing redesigned the pin a few years ago using stainless steel to help prevent this issue. These pins are more durable, have a stronger neck, and include a side-cut key to reduce theft. Regular maintenance, such as applying a lubricant and protectant like BoeShield T-9, can help keep the pin operating smoothly for years.
If a pin is already stuck, there are several ways to remove it:
- Heat and tap: Use a torch to gently heat the pin and hitch, then tap with a hammer and punch to free it.
- Cutting: A Sawzall with a thin metal blade can be used to cut the pin, often from the back side of the hitch.
- Drilling: Drill out the pin starting with smaller pilot holes, then work up to a 5/8-inch drill to avoid damaging the hitch.
Once removed, install a stainless steel pin and maintain it regularly to prevent future issues.
Different manufacturers produce slightly different receiver tubing, so achieving a perfectly tight fit with the Rapid Hitch can be difficult. However, anti-rattle products, such as the Roadmaster Quiet Hitch, can help reduce slop and vibration. Many Rapid Hitch owners have found these products effective in improving the fit.
The Rapid Hitch does not work well for the grounding of your trailer lights due to a few things: 1 - The multiple moving parts cause loss of connection when going over bumps. 2 - The two different types of metal (aluminum and steel) 3 - The hitch will become somewhat looser in the receiver due to age.
We highly recommend your trailer wiring harness to be inspected and have the ground (white) wire connect the trailer to the tow vehicle and that should stop all the problems of the lights be intermittent.
The zinc plating on our ball combo for the Rapid Hitch does scratch through to the base coat and eventually to the raw steel as the metal coupler of the trailer rubs the ball combo through normal use.
To prolong the life of a combo ball we recommend the use of greasing the top of the ball which lubricates the coupler of the trailer. The best option for those who want a complete rust-free unit is to use our Greaseless Alumiball which is an aluminum ball combo with black caps on which allow the coupler to rotate freely without the metal on metal grinding. Below is a picture of a Rapid Hitch with the greaseless combo ball.
